Chandra Shekhar Azad, also known as Azad, was one of the most prominent freedom fighters of India's struggle for independence against British colonial rule. He played an instrumental role in organizing revolutionary activities, and his daring acts against the British made him a legend in the history of India's freedom struggle. Azad was an active member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), a group committed to achieving India's independence through armed struggle.

Early Life and Revolutionary Activities

Born on July 23, 1906, in Bhavra, a small town in present-day Madhya Pradesh, Azad was passionate about the freedom movement since his childhood. He was only 15 years old when he was arrested for participating in the non-cooperation movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. He was later released, but the incident shaped his thinking, and he realized that the non-violent method of struggle alone could not achieve India's freedom.

Azad became involved in revolutionary activities and joined the HSRA in 1921. He played a significant role in the Kakori train robbery of 1925, in which the group stole money from a train carrying British goods. Later, he went into hiding to evade arrest.

Death

On February 27, 1931, Azad was in Allahabad to meet his friend and fellow revolutionary Sukhdev, who was facing a trial in the city. The British police, who had been tracking Azad, surrounded him and ordered him to surrender. Azad, who was armed, fought bravely to the end, killing three police officers before being fatally wounded.

let me remind you that he was not killed by the Britishers as he promised himself to not surrender or be arrested by the Britishers instead he would kill himself. He was surrounded by the Britishers in Alfred park in Allahabad where he had only one last bullet to kill any Britishers but he killed himself just to his promise of being Azad. - Revati S Misra20-Feb-2023
