Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi is the full name of Indira Gandhi. She was also the third Prime Minister of India. She served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977. She has been known as the ‘Iron Lady of India’. In the year 1999, she was also named as the ‘Woman of the Millennium’ by BBC in a poll organization. She has been awarded Bharat Ratna because in her career she worked a lot towards the Public Issues and implemented many Agricultural Innovation Programs. These programs helped India to increase the production of crops as well as reduce the shortage of food in India and make the country free of Poverty.
She the central figure of Indian National Congressafter the death of her father and the first Prime Minister of India ‘Jawaharlal Nehru’. After 1977, she was again selected as the Prime of India in the year 1980, and remain the Prime Minister until her assassination in October 1884. This made her the second longest serving Prime Minister of India after Jawaharlal Nehru. She was killed by her own bodyguards after the ‘Operation Blue Star’ conducted under her after the period of Emergency gets over.
During the initial period of her Prime Minister, she was completely guided by the other ministers of the Congress party. Which landed him into controversy and named as the ‘Goongi Gudiya’ (a dumb doll or puppet) by the opposition. Whereas, later on, she took all the power in her hand and her decision-making skills marked her with a new name i.e. ‘Iron Lady’. After all these, she has been widely criticized by the opposition for her decision over Emergency just to retain the power in her hands.
