The oil refinery in Rajasthan’s Barmer district was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the commencement of work of the state’s first oil refinery on Tuesday, 16th January 2018. The first of its oil refinery in the country has been set up in Rajasthan which is expected to generate more than 50000 jobs in the state.

The oil refinery is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and the Rajasthan government. The project is expected to be completed within 4 years and is set to be operational by 2022 end. The estimated cost of the project is around 43000 crores. The project involves refinery and petroleum complex of 9 MMTPA capacity and is considered to be the largest investment in the state. The Rajasthan government owns 26% stake in the project and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) owns 74% stake in the project.

Barmer is a Group C city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Barmer was earlier known as Mallani until its Parmar ruler (Juna Barmer) popularly known as Bar Rao (Bahada Rao) gave the region its present name ‘Barmer’. Rajasthan lies to the northwestern side of the country. It is the largest state of India in terms of area 342,329 sq km (132,139 sq mi). Rajasthani is being spoken in the state however Hindi is the official language which is also widely spoken by the citizens of the State.
