Perplexity gave a very confident answer with a citation, I clicked the link, and the page says nothing of the sort. How often does this happen?

Often enough that you should always click through on anything important. What happens is it reads several pages, writes a summary, then attaches sources. Most of the time the match is right. But sometimes it takes a fact from page A and pins it to page B, or it paraphrases so loosely that the original doesn't really support the claim.
When that happens, ask it straight: "which source says this exactly?" It'll either point to the right one or admit it can't find it, which is your answer.
Every AI search tool does this by the way, Perplexity is just more honest about it because the links are right there to check. Treat it like a smart intern who's read a lot, not a reference book.
