Norway is the most democratic nation in the globe, with a total rating of 9.75, while Afghanistan is the least productive, with a total rating of 0.32, displacing North Korea.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) published a study on the health of democracy in 165 sovereign nations and 2 territories in 2021. The results of the study are based on 5 results: electoral system and diversity, government performance, political involvement, national discourse, and civil freedoms. The study has been further classified as a complete democracy, a defective democracy, a hybrid government, and an autocratic dictatorship.

The top five nations are Norway, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland, while the lowest five are the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, North Korea, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, according to the Democracy Index 2021. Since the index's inception in 2006, Latin America has suffered the worst setback in 2021 of any region, with the greatest number of nations seeing double-digit downgrades. In 2021, the region's score across all index categories dropped.

The 10 most improved nations in the ranking are Zambia, Indonesia, Qatar, Moldova, India, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Montenegro, Guyana, Uruguay, and, in equal tenth place, the UAE and Singapore. More than one-third of the world's population is subject to authoritarian control, with just 6.4 percent enjoying complete democracy. The global democracy index dropped from 5.37 to a new low of 5.28 out of 10. The only comparable dip since 2006 occurred in 2010, following the international economic meltdown. Asia is still rated fourth on the Democracy Index 2021, after North America, Western Europe, and Latin America.

With an aggregate score of 6.91, India placed 46 on the worldwide ranking in the faulty democracy category. It received a 5 for national discourse and an 8.67 for election system and liberal values. The country receives a score of 6.18 for civil rights, 7.22 for political involvement, and 7.50 for government performance. When we look at India's neighbors, we see that China (148), Myanmar (166), and Afghanistan (167) are in the Authoritarian group, Bangladesh (75), Bhutan (81), Nepal (101), and Pakistan (104) are in the Hybrid Regime category, and Sri Lanka (67) is in the Flawed Democracy category.
