South Africa has deployed its first satellite system designed wholly on the African continent. Three domestically manufactured nanosatellites that comprised the nation's first
Maritime Domain Awareness Satellite (MDASat)
array were released from Cape Canaveral, Florida, as part of
American aerospace company SpaceX's Transporter-3 operation.
Transporter-3, SpaceX’s third dedicated rideshare mission, carried a total of 105 spacecraft for various organizations and
governments, including CubeSats, microsats, PocketQubes, and orbital transfer vehicles.
The
International Marine Organization defines
maritime domain awareness (MDA)
as an effective understanding of everything related to the maritime domain that may influence
security, safety, the economy, or the environment. MDA is claimed to act as a 'critical facilitator' for other maritime
security challenges, such as anti-piracy patrols, in the sense that to conduct successful patrols, you must first be able to perform effective MDA. All locations and items of, on, under, relating to, next to, or bordering on a sea, ocean, or another navigable waterway, including all maritime-related activities,
infrastructure, people, cargo, vessels, and other conveyances, are included in the maritime domain.
