On February 13, 1985, Somdev Kishore Devvarman, a former professional Indian tennis player, was born. He earned headlines for being the only collegiate player to reach three consecutive NCAA finals, winning back-to-back championships at the University of Virginia in his junior and senior years.

Since 1950, just three other players have matched that feat. At the 2008 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, he set a new record with a 44–1 win-loss record. His highest ATP World Tour performance was reaching the final of the Chennai Open as a wild card entrant in 2009.

Somdev won gold in the men's singles event at the XIXth Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, and he followed that up with gold in the men's singles and doubles events at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Scott McCain was his coach.

Devvarman was awarded the Arjuna Award by the Indian government in 2011 for his tennis achievements. In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of Indiaappointed him as a national observer for tennis. He was given the civilian award Padma Shri in 2018.

Devvarman won the singles in the 2014 ONGC–GAIL Delhi Open in February 2014, defeating Kazakhstan's Aleksandr Nedovyesov. In the 2015 Delhi Open, he successfully defended his title against Yuki Bhambri in February. Devvarman announced his retirement from professional tennis on January 1, 2017.
