On **February 13, 1985**, S**omdev Kishore Devvarman**, a former **professional [Indian](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94169/which-is-the-first-indian-communication-satellite) tennis player**, was born. He earned headlines for being the only collegiate player to reach three consecutive **NCAA finals**, winning back-to-back championships at the **University of Virginia** in his **junior** and **senior** years. \
Since **1950**, just three other players have matched that feat. At the **2008 NCAA Men's Tennis Championship**, he set a new record with a **44–1 win-loss record**. His highest ATP World Tour performance was reaching the final of the **Chennai Open** as a **wild card** entrant in **2009**. \
**Somdev won gold** in the men's singles event at the **XIXth Commonwealth Games** in **New Delhi** in **2010**, and he followed that up with gold in the men's singles and doubles events at the **2010 Asian Games** in **Guangzhou**, **China**. **Scott McCain** was his coach. \
**Devvarman** was awarded the **Arjuna Award** by the **[Indian](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94169/which-is-the-first-indian-communication-satellite) government** in **2011** for his tennis achievements. In **March 2017**, the **Ministry of Youth Affairs** and **Sports of the Government of [India](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/94169/which-is-the-first-indian-communication-satellite)**appointed him as a national observer for tennis. He was given the civilian award **Padma Shri in 2018**. \
Devvarman won the singles in the **2014 ONGC–GAIL Delhi Open** in **February 2014**, defeating **Kazakhstan's Aleksandr Nedovyesov**. In the **2015 Delhi Open**, he successfully defended his title against **Yuki Bhambri** in **February**. **Devvarman** announced his retirement from professional **tennis** on **January 1, 2017.**
