Along with Kathakali, Mohiniattam is a popular classical dance form of Kerala, India. It adheres to Lasya type which displays a more graceful, gentle and feminine dance form. This word is derived from the word Mohini - female avatar of Lord Vishnu and attam means graceful body movements. Literal meaning of this form is - dance of enchantress.
The musical accompaniment of this dance form is chollu. The attire for this dance is - white saree bordered with broad golden brocade known as kasavu in Malayalam.
It is a solo dance form performed by female artists. Through dancing and singing a song in Manipravala - mix of Sanskrit and Malayalam, it emotes a play along with the recitation by vocalist or by the dancer only. Its origin is traceable in temples of Kerala. The Kerala kalamandalam is the centre in Kerala for attaining training in Mohiniattam.
