An NGO based in
Bengaluru famous with the name “Akshaya Patra” has been awarded with the
BBC World Service Global Champion Award.
The
award has been presented to Akshaya Patra, during an
award ceremony at the ‘BBC Food and
Farming Awards' organized at Bristol in London. The BBC World Service Global Champion Award recognizes the contribution made by a project or a person who is taking firm steps towards changing the way the
world produces, processes, consumes or think about food for the betterment of masses.
The
Non-Government Organization, Akshaya Patra has selected a panel of
International Judges while the nominations were sent in by the World Service audiences
present around the world. The
other nominations along with Akshaya Patra were UK Charity, WRAP, and Food 4
Education.
Akshaya Patra the non-profit
organization is one of the world’s largest project which serves
school meals based in India. The
CEO of Akshaya Patra, ‘Shridhar Venkat’ received the award
with great honor and feel proud to achieve the place in
society and support the future of India to be bright and educated. He
started his charity work of supporting children’s to provide at least a single time meal to
children and get basic education as well about 20 years ago.
Initially, the Akshaya Patra started its work by providing only 1500 free school lunches on a daily basis. However, now the reach of the
Akshaya Patra increases to feeding 1.75 Million Children’s all over India, especially with the hot and freshly prepared food delivery on time.
It has been the 3rd edition of BBC World Service Global Food Championship Award. In the year
2018, the chef ‘Jose Andres’ won the award
for providing the aid of 3.4 Million meals for the people of Puerto Rico during the aftermath of
Hurricane Maria.
