“Najma Akhtar” became the first woman Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia on April 2019. She is the Head of the Department of Training and Capacity Building in Education in the ‘National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration’ (NIEPA), New Delhi.

She was appointed by the President of India, Ramnath Kovind, to head the 99 year old University, on April 11, 2019. Along with Najma Akhtar, other appointments for chancellors were ‘Sanjiv Sharma’ Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Bihar and ‘Rajneesh Kumar Shukla’ Vice Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya in Maharashtra.
During the Head of the Department at National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, she has been known for superheading International Educational Administrator’s for Senior Officers from 130 Countries for more than 15 years. Najma Akhtar is also responsible for establishing and successfully developing the First State Level Management Institute (SIEMET) at Allahabad for the development of educational administration in the country.
She is a Ph.D. in Education from Kurukshetra University. As well as, she carried many crucial hats in her career. At Aligarh Muslim University, she managed the Affairs or Premier Educational Institutes at various positions like Controller of Examination and Director and Academic Programs. However, it is expected that under her great leadership the Jamia Milia Islamia may expand, prosper, and develops a safe and strong environment for learning. She wrote two books and contributed many chapters for books as well as research papers too.
She has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia as the seat has been lying vacant after the previous Vice-Chancellor Talat Ahmad was appointed the Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University in August 2018.
