If this problem arises without the need for an update, it's most likely due to a random fault in the camera app. You can fix the problem by forcing the app to close, restarting your iPhone, and then reopening the camera app.

  • To quit the camera app, tap the Home button twice to open the App Switcher, which lists all of the programs that are operating in the background. To close the camera app's preview, swipe upon it.
You may also shut off all background programs to remove the potential that one of them is generating a problem. When the applications are closed, press and hold the Side/Power button until the Power off slider displays, then restart your iPhone 8 Plus as usual. To totally turn off your iPhone, drag the slider. Press and hold the Side/Power button for another 30 seconds, or until the Apple logo displays.

When your iPhone is fully charged, boots up completely, launch the Camera app then test to see if autofocus is already working properly.
