Periods of play
A contest is divided into two 45-minute halves, which can only be reduced if the referee and both teams agree before the start of the match and it is in conformity with competition rules.
Half-time interval
At half-time, players are entitled to a 15-minute break; at half-time in extra time, they are entitled to a one-minute drink break. The duration of the half-time gap must be specified in the competition rules, and it can only be changed with the referee's consent.
Allowance for time lost
The referee makes an allowance in each half for all playing time missed in that half due to injury.
- substitutions
- Injured players are assessed and/or removed.
- Time wasting
- disciplinary measures
- medical stops allowed by competition rules, such as 'drinks' breaks (no more than one minute) and 'cooling' stops (ninety seconds to three minutes)
- VAR 'checks' and reviews cause delays.
- any other reason, such as a considerable delay in resuming operations (e.g. goal celebrations).
- At the end of each half's final minute, the fourth official indicates the minimal additional time set by the referee. The referee has the option of increasing or decreasing the additional time.
The referee may not change the duration of the second half to compensate for a timekeeping inaccuracy in the first half.
Penalty kick
If a penalty kick is required, the half is extended until the penalty kick is completed.
Abandoned match
An abandoned match is replayed unless the competition rules or organizers determine otherwise.
