Yes, you can compare the structure of an Atom with the structure of the Universe but, you will hurt the sentiments of the Cosmologist.

Can we compare the structure of the universe with the structure of an atom?

Many theories explain the nature of the Atom and the nature of the universe. And some of the theories have a contradiction in them. Like when we talk about the nature of atoms in quantum physics it tells the central part of it as a nucleus that can’t be further distributed but, the structure of the universe shows the distribution of the universe among many stars and planets.

Atom’s Structure
The quantum picture of an atom is simply showing the picture of having one nucleus and it is surrounded by a distributed probability field and can be described as the electrons which have the negligible mass of the whole atom. The largest stake of the mass of the atom is in the nucleus, where almost 99.9% of the mass is only present in it.
In the below picture we can visualize the simple axisymmetric atoms are like so. But when we see the more complex images of atoms then the complexity of the nature of the picture increased and it becomes much mucky.

Can we compare the structure of the universe with the structure of an atom?

As we know that in our periodic table the simplistic structure of the atom is Hydrogenone. This is shown in the image and can be described by the nonrelativistic limit by the hydrogenic wave function.

Structure of universe
According to the cosmological principle, the current universe is divided into two postulates
  • Isotropic
  • Homogenous behavior of the universe looks the same at every location
Here this is the biggest difference between both that the atom can’t have the homogenous behavior at all. And this is the biggest failure of the comparison.
One other method which defines the simple and more accurately about the universe is the FLRW Metric. This describes the general homogenous and isotropic universe of the curvature. By attaching this

equation with the Einstein field equation shows that the universe is expanding. And there are other some of the facts with the mathematical expression for example-
  • Universe is homogenous while Atoms are not
  • Atoms do not have time dependant factors in them in primary cases but on the other hand, the universe has.
These were some of the reasons for the comparison. And whenever you will compare the Atom with the universe you will find that it is not so. And both are not symmetrical. Hence whenever you will consider both the matter at the same time the cosmologist will die a little bit internally.
