Why Does a CSS Layout Become Wider Than the Mobile Screen?

I have a page that fits at desktop width, but on a phone I can scroll sideways even though the main container has width: 100%. The overflow seems to come and go as I hide sections, so I’m not sure which element is causing it.

What’s your usual way to track down the source of horizontal overflow in a responsive layout? I’m using CSS Grid and Flexbox, and I’m wondering whether long text, minimum item widths, or padding are the first things I should inspect.
