# Why Does a CSS Layout Become Wider Than the Mobile Screen?

I have a page that fits at desktop width, but on a phone I can scroll sideways even though the main container has **width: 100%**. The overflow seems to come and go as I hide sections, so I’m not sure which element is causing it.

What’s your usual way to track down the source of horizontal overflow in a [responsive layout](https://www.mindstick.com/forum/158679/what-are-the-key-differences-between-css-flexbox-and-css-grid-for-creating-responsive-layouts)? I’m using CSS Grid and Flexbox, and I’m wondering whether long text, minimum item widths, or padding are the first things I should inspect.
