How Does Perplexity Choose Which Sources to Cite?

When I ask Perplexity a question, it sometimes cites a specialist article alongside a major news outlet, even when several pages cover nearly the same facts. I’m curious how it decides which sources make it into the answer and which are left out.

Does Perplexity’s citation selection depend more on how directly a page answers the prompt, its authority, freshness, or something else? I’m also interested in whether changing the wording of a question tends to change the citations as much as the answer.
