# How Does Perplexity Choose Which Sources to Cite?

When I ask Perplexity a question, it sometimes cites a specialist article alongside a major news outlet, even when several pages cover nearly the same facts. I’m curious how it decides which sources make it into the answer and which are left out.

Does **Perplexity’s citation selection** depend more on how directly a page answers the prompt, its authority, freshness, or something else? I’m also interested in whether changing the wording of a question tends to change the citations as much as the answer.
