I’ve noticed that several recent and planned lunar missions focus on the lunar south pole. What makes that region especially interesting compared with landing somewhere nearer the Moon’s equator?
I’m curious whether the interest is mainly about finding water ice, getting useful sunlight for a lander, or something else. How do the permanently shadowed areas and the terrain affect what a mission can realistically do there?
