# Why Are So Many Moon Missions Interested in the Lunar South Pole?

I’ve noticed that several recent and planned lunar missions focus on the [lunar south pole](https://answers.mindstick.com/qa/117511/how-could-lunar-dust-affect-equipment-at-the-moons-south-pole). What makes that region especially interesting compared with landing somewhere nearer the Moon’s equator?

I’m curious whether the interest is mainly about finding water ice, getting useful sunlight for a lander, or something else. How do the permanently shadowed areas and the terrain affect what a mission can realistically do there?
