Several nearly ripe tomatoes in my garden have split open after a few days of heavy rain. The plants looked healthy beforehand, and the cracks are mostly around the tops of the fruit.
Is this usually related to soil moisture swings, or could the variety or ripeness be making it worse? I water by hand when the beds look dry, so I’m also wondering whether there’s a practical way to reduce the cracking without keeping the soil constantly wet.
