# Why Are My Tomatoes Splitting After Heavy Rain?

Several nearly ripe tomatoes in my garden have split open after a few days of heavy rain. The plants looked healthy beforehand, and the cracks are mostly around the tops of the fruit.

Is this usually related to **soil moisture swings**, or could the variety or ripeness be making it worse? I water by hand when the beds look dry, so I’m also wondering whether there’s a practical way to reduce the cracking without keeping the soil constantly wet.
