I keep seeing references to various honors in news and competitive exam materials, but I'm never entirely sure which one sits at the top. When people talk about the highest civilian award in India, are they referring to the Bharat Ratna, or is there another distinction I should know about?

The Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in India. Instituted in 1954, it recognises exceptional service or performance in any field of human endeavour. The award is conferred by the President of India on the Prime Minister’s recommendation.
