India is reported to be on track to meet its 2026 interim production targets under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, a sign that early projects and policy support are beginning to move from plans toward delivery.

Launched in 2023, the mission aims to build a domestic green hydrogen industry and reach annual production of 5 million tonnes by 2030. It supports production through incentives for green hydrogen and electrolyser manufacturing, alongside efforts to develop the infrastructure needed to supply and use the fuel.

Being on track is an encouraging milestone, but it is not the same as having the full expected output already in operation. Project commissioning, reliable access to renewable electricity, transport and storage, and buyers willing to use green hydrogen will all shape how much production is actually achieved.

The 2026 interim targets will therefore be a useful check on whether announced capacity is translating into real supply—and whether India can sustain the pace needed for its longer-term 2030 goal.
