From July 25, 2017, to July 25, 2022, the President of India was Ram Nath Kovind. He was the member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Governor of Bihar. Kovind was India’s 14th President and his tenure underlined constitutional integrity, education, and social inclusion.
The 15th President of the Republic of India is Droupadi Murmu. She assumed office on 25 July 2022. So in 2025, the President of India is Droupadi Murmu.
Early Life and Background
Droupadi Murmu was born in Uparbeda village, in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, on 20 June 1958.She is part of the Santhal tribal community a historically backward group. She completed her higher education in Bhubaneswar, earning a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & Economics.
Political Career
Murmu has a long career in politics and public service prior to being elected as president:
From 2000 to 2009, she represented the Rairangpur constituency in the Odisha Legislative Assembly. She served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce & Transport and later for Fisheries & Animal Resources Development in the state of
Odisha.
She became the first tribal woman to assume a governorship in a state with a tribal majority when she was selected as Jharkhand's ninth governor in 2015 and held the position until 2021.
Significance of Her Presidency
Murmu's presidency is remarkable for a number of reasons:
She is the first member of the Santhal community, a Scheduled Tribe, to hold the office of President of India.
