Why are my Reddit posts removed immediately after posting?

When posting on Reddit, if account rules and karma restrictions are violated, subreddit-specific rules are breached or if the site-wide spam filters are not cleared, the post, sadly, does not make it to the “New” section.

Understanding why a Reddit post is removed immediately after posting is as important as posting on this forum-style website. Also known as "front page of the internet," the social media platform is a storehouse of thousands of topic-specific communities also known as "subreddits", making it a one-stop solution for information on a plethora of domains and verticals. "Redditors," are registered users who are allowed to post links, text posts, images, and videos to a relevant subreddit. However, there could be times when a user's post gets removed immediately after posting on Reddit. The reasons being:

Account and karma restrictions

New accounts and those with low karma scores are likely to face the wrath of having their posts removed almost immediately after posting. Karma restrictions are specific guidelines listed by the subreddit moderators that are applicable to the respective communities. While there is no yardstick specifying karma requirements, the larger communities have a reputation of having higher restrictions, and on the flip side, smaller, niche-specific subreddits can have low or no requirements. Users with the minimum score can be assured that their post sees the light of the day. It means they have stuck to the community guidelines while posting and commenting.

In a bid to keep spamming at bay, several subreddits without second thoughts pull down posts and comments courtesy of brand-new accounts or the ones with a low karma score. This is especially common with the ones dealing with controversial subjects

Violation of subreddit-specific rules

Posts and comments shared from an account that is “shadowbanned” by Reddit admins will be visible to the author and no other user can view it. Under circumstances of persistent violation of community guidelines, the respective admins, left with no choice, mark the particular account as shadowbanned.

A programmed bot christened “AutoModerator”, is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that all subreddit rules are ‘followed to the t.’ Just in case the AutoModerator detects incorrect formatting, a banned link or an unforbidden word, the content, regardless of its form, is instantaneously removed.

Email address of user unverified

A section of subreddits, especially the ones governed by stringent rules, also remove posts originating from unverified user email addresses. Subreddit moderators are authorized to pull down a post or comment that is shared from a user whose email is unverified on the Reddit platform. In a bid to avoid this situation, every user is advised to have their email registered at the Reddit account settings.

Posting on Reddit: Tips to Have in Mind to Avoid Having Post Removed

1. Before Posting

  • Before posting on the platform, the author must do his/ her homework well. Redditors must ensure they strike a balance between understanding and following etiquette and following guidelines specified by the subreddits.
  • The content creator must research and identify the right community for the post. Additionally, an engaging title, quality content, appropriate links and a relevant image must accompany the post.
  • A strong karma score can reduce the chance of having the post rejected. This means the redditor is in the good books of the community admins and moderators.
  • It is a good practice to take a closer look at community guidelines and adhere to them.
  • Lastly, having email verified can bring down chances of the post being rejected on the platform.

2. While Posting

  • Sharing information like useful tips, case studies and even personal experience as a post, adds value and it strengthens its reach.
  • Aligning and formatting the content makes it easier to read and can increase the amount of time users spend with the post.
  • Selecting the right time to share content can help gain visibility. Posting during community peak hours when a majority of users are online, is the ideal time to share content.

3. After Posting

The journey of a post does not end with ensuring it is live. Happiness is when it is well received by the audience. This can be achieved when the post is engaging. Comments and feedback left by other users must be handled diplomatically. Just in case, you realize that your content is removed, take the trouble of performing a post mortem of the post, understand what is wrong with it and take care to not repeat the mistake going ahead.
