I’m integrating a reasoning model through an API, and I’m seeing a frustrating pattern: the request runs, the model appears to do a lot of work, and then the response ends before it gives a useful answer. Sometimes I get a short final response; sometimes the output looks incomplete.
Is the model spending the maximum output tokens on its internal reasoning before it has room to write the answer? I’m trying to understand how this behaves across providers such as OpenAI, Claude, and DeepSeek, rather than assuming every API uses the same token budget rules.
What I’m trying to distinguish
When I look at a response, I want to know whether the model genuinely ran out of room or whether something else stopped generation. Those can look similar in the application: the user sees a partial answer, but the cause might be a generation limit, a stop condition, a timeout, or a provider-specific behavior.
- Do reasoning tokens count toward the same output cap as the visible answer?
- Does a provider expose a separate thinking budget, or is it part of the overall response limit?
- Can the API report token use in a way that helps distinguish reasoning from the final answer?
- Are limits different between model families or API endpoints from the same provider?
I’ve also noticed that the API’s token usage fields don’t always seem to map neatly to what the application displays. A response can have a surprisingly large output count even when the user only sees a couple of sentences. If some of that count represents reasoning or other non-user-facing output, that would explain the mismatch—but I don’t want to guess based on one provider’s response format.
What should I check first?
My current plan is to log the requested output limit alongside the model name, finish reason, and usage details returned by the API. I’d also compare a small prompt with a reasoning-heavy one, keeping the model and settings the same. If the small prompt completes but the harder one stops early, that may point to budget pressure rather than a broken stream or an application timeout.
I’m especially interested in model-specific limits. If reasoning and final text share a cap for one model, increasing the total budget might help. If the API offers a separate reasoning control, adjusting that could be more appropriate. But I’m not sure whether there’s a reliable way to infer this from usage data alone, particularly when providers expose different fields or change their APIs.
For anyone who has shipped reasoning models in production: how do you tell when a truncated final answer is caused by the token budget? Do you set a fixed cushion for the answer, adapt the budget to the task, or inspect provider-specific usage and finish reasons? I’d appreciate examples from OpenAI, Claude, Grok, Perplexity, or DeepSeek integrations, especially where the user-facing answer is much shorter than the reported generation.
