On March 27, 2023, a suicide bombing occurred near Afghanistan's foreign ministry in Kabul, resulting in the death of six people. The ministry is situated in a heavily fortified area in the city center, near other government buildings and foreign embassies, and has been the target of a previous attack earlier this year. The suicide bomber was intercepted by Afghan forces at a security checkpoint close to the ministry, but the explosives he carried detonated, killing six civilians and injuring several others.

Although the police spokesperson did not specify the target, the explosion happened near a heavily guarded street that houses multiple government buildings, including the foreign ministry. As per the same source, three Taliban security force members were among the wounded.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of yet. However, there have been multiple attacks in Kabul and other urban areas of Afghanistan in recent months, some of which have been attributed to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS).

The Italian non-governmental organization (NGO) that operates a hospital in Kabul received patients at its surgical center, which specializes in treating victims of Afghanistan's prolonged war. According to a tweet by the NGO, at least one child was among the injured.

The attack occurred around lunchtime, during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, when the city was densely crowded due to government office staff leaving early for the day. According to local media, the police cordoned off all routes leading to the blast site.

The Taliban regime has claimed to be committed to securing the country and has launched several operations against suspected ISIL members in recent weeks. However, the recent string of attacks suggests that the security situation in Afghanistan remains fragile, and there is a likelihood of further violence and instability in the country.
