Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan is facing arrest in connection with a case related to the purchase and sale of gifts given by foreign dignitaries. The case was filed in August by a member of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), who alleges that Khan failed to declare the assets in declarations submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan. The 70-year-old has denied the accusations, stating that he bought the gifts according to the official rules and guidelines and declared them in his tax returns. The former PM has been charged in a total of 70 cases since his removal from power in April 2022, including for sedition, corruption, and terrorism. Why is the ExPrime Minister of Pakistan Imran khan being arrested

In another high-profile case, Khan was charged with “terrorismfor remarks made at a public rally in Islamabad against police officials and a female judge who had ordered the arrest of one of his top aides. The Islamabad High Court dismissed the charges against him in September, saying his comments did not rise to the level of “terrorism”.

Khan’s legal team has rejected the Election Commission of Pakistan's decision to suspend him from the existing parliament, calling the verdict not only an attack on Khan but “Pakistan’s constitution and its people”. The former PM has also been accused of receiving illegal funds, which could result in his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), being banned from politics.

Khan was forced to resign by the ruling coalition Pakistan Democratic Movement in April, after three and a half years in power, in a vote of no confidence. Since then, he has been holding countrywide protests to push the government for early elections, due no later than October. Khan has claimed he was removed as part of a United States-led conspiracy that also involved Pakistan’s powerful military establishment and his political rivals. Despite the legal troubles, Khan remains popular, and his party has won several national and provincial by-elections in the past 10 months, including in PML-N strongholds. The PTI is also seen as a leading contender in the upcoming polls in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
