Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is celebrated every year on the 9th of January to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the country. It is also a day to remember the contribution of Mahatma Gandhi, who was the first 'Pravasi Bharatiya'.
PBD was started in 2003 by the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The day is celebrated to recognize the contribution of the Indian diaspora to the development of India. Every year, the Ministry of External Affairs invites a select group of people of Indian origin from all over the world to participate in the celebrations.
This day also provides an opportunity for the diaspora to engage with the Government of India on issues of concern to them. The main aim of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is to provide a platform for the Indian diaspora to connect with their homeland. It is also an opportunity for the diaspora to contribute to the economic and social development of India. The day is of great significance for the Indian diaspora. It is a day when they can remember their roots and also contribute to the development of their motherland.
The theme of PBD 2020 was 'Contributing to Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 2021 was a virtual event.
Aatmanirbhar Bharat is the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for an economically strong and self-reliant India. The Prime Minister has urged the Indian diaspora to be a part of this vision and contribute to the development of the country.
PBD is an important day in the history of India. It is a day to remember the contribution of Indians who have made a mark in the world. It is also a day to engage with the diaspora and discuss issues of mutual concern.
