When did the BWF World Championships start?

The most popular versions of the game are 'singles' (with one player per side) and 'doubles,' however it can also be played with bigger teams (with two players per side). While formal matches are conducted on a rectangular indoor court, badminton is frequently played as a recreational outdoor pastime in a yard or on a beach. The shuttlecock must land in the half of the court belonging to the opposing team in order to score a point.

But What Is BWF?

A badminton competition sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation is known as the BWF World Championships, formerly known as the IBF World Championships and also known as the World Badminton Championships (BWF). Together with the Summer Olympics badminton tournaments, which debuted in 1992, the competition is one of the most prestigious in badminton and awards the most ranking points. The victors of this competition are also named the sport's 'World Champions' and get a gold medal.

From 1977 through 1983, the tournament was held once every three years. The World Badminton Federation, which later merged with the IBF to form one badminton federation, hosted the same tournament a year after the IBF World Championships with the same objectives, so the IBF (International Badminton Federation) encountered difficulties in hosting the first two competitions.

The competition changed from being annual in 1985 to being biennial in 2005. The competition is a yearly event on the BWF schedule beginning in 2006. To avoid scheduling issues, the competition is not staged in years when the Summer Olympics are hosted.

Badminton made its Olympic debut in 1972 as a demonstration sport and in 1988 as an exhibition sport. It was made a full-medal Olympic sport for the 1992 Games, including competition in the men's and women's singles (one against one) and doubles events (two against two). The mixed pairs event debuted in the 1996 Olympics.
