One of the symbols used by the Olympic movement is the Olympic flame. It also represents the continuity between traditional and contemporary games. The Olympic torch is ignited in Olympia, Greece, some months before the Olympic Games

When the Olympic cauldron is lit during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, the relay of the Olympic torch officially comes to an end. The flame then burns inside the cauldron throughout the competition until it is put out during the Olympic closing ceremony.

Architect Jan Wils created the stadium for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, introducing the Olympic flame as a representation of the modern Olympic movement

The inspiration for the Olympic flame came from ancient Greek rituals in which a sacred fire was maintained burning on the altar of the temple of Hestia throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. Fire was associated with the gods in Greek mythology, and Prometheus is said to have taken it from them.

Every two years, the current Olympic flame is lit in front of the remains of the temple of Hera. An employee of the Electric Utility of Amsterdam kindled the first contemporary Olympic flame in the Marathon Tower of the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam when the custom of an Olympic fire was reinstated during the 1928 Summer Olympics.Since then, the Olympic torch has always been a fixture of the Summer Olympics. At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, the Olympic torch relay made its debut at the Summer Olympics.

At the location of the ancient Olympics in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic fire is lit many months before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Who had introduced the Olympic Flame?

At a ceremony held at the Temple of Hera, eleven women dressed as the Vestal Virgins perform as the Olympic Torch Relay's first torch is lit by the sun. A parabolic mirror concentrates the light from it. The torch is presented to the first relay bearer, who is also a Greek athlete, by a female performer dressed as a priestess. She also gives him an olive branch.

Routes travelled by the Olympic torch serve as symbols of human achievement. The Olympic torch has been transported in a variety of methods, however it is still typically carried by runners. The fire crossed the English Channel via boat in 1948 and 2012 and was carried by Canberra rowers in 2008 and a dragon boat in Hong Kong.
