How many Indian astronauts have been selected for India’s first human space mission?

Four accomplished pilots from the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been chosen to fly India's first manned space mission, dubbed'Gaganyaan,' around the earth's orbit by 2022, according to ISRO Chairman K Sivan on Wednesday. 'Four IAF pilots have been chosen to fly our first manned space mission in 2021–2022. Three of them will travel to space to undertake microgravity and biological research studies for a week in orbit above the earth, Sivan told reporters, declining to give their names or identities. The group will begin training in Russia during the third week of this month in preparation to become the first Indian crew to leave Earth's atmosphere.

The four pilots had medical examinations at the Indian Aviation Medicine of the IAF in Bengaluru and at the Russian space agency, where they will receive training in every facet of a human space mission, according to Sivan.

Sivan stated that the crew will be all men as all four candidates were men, despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi's indication in his Independence speech on August 15, 2018, that three Indians, including a woman, would be flown into space. The ISRO had intimated that the majority of the astronauts on the manned space mission 'Gaganyaan' will be pilots last year. Out of the 12 candidates who had been shortlisted by the Indian Air Force for the Gaganyaan project, seven pilots were flown to Russia for training.

The ISRO plans to launch 'Gaganyaan,' India's manned space project, by December 2021. The goal of the project is to place the astronauts in a lower orbit around the planet, and the spaceship will contain a capsule with enough oxygen and other necessities for the 'Gagan Yatris.' The space agency will launch 2-3 unmanned trips with humanoids in 2020 and 2021 in order to test the human rating of the propulsion modules, including the crew module and the escape system in the event of any emergency in the spaceship, before to the ambitious manned mission.

Conclusion.

The first Indian to visit space was former IAF pilot Rakesh Sharma. As part of the Intercosmos programme, the Soviet Union's Soyuz T-11 voyage was launched on April 2, 1984, with Sharma as a crew member. Among the well-known names who have travelled to space are Sunita Williams and Kalpana Chawla, both of Indian descent. One of the seven crew members that died in the 2003 Columbia space shuttle accident on re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere was Chawla. The announcement of the Gaganyaan mission was referred to as a 'changing point' for the ISRO by K Radhakrishnan, the former ISRO chairman whose guidance the Mangalyaan project was launched in 2013.
