The renaming of three city landmarks and a few more locations was approved by the Delhi administration on Tuesday. Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister, addressed the media that day and announced that the Naming Committee has decided to rename Mubarak Chowk in honour of Captain Vikram Batra (who died during the Kargil battle), as well as Mehrauli-Badarpur Road in honour of Acharya Shri Mahapragya. The Supreme Court Metro station will henceforth be called Pragati Maidan Metro station, per the committee's decision.

Captain Vikram Batra, after whom Delhi is to rename it’s Mubarak Chowk, was martyred in which war?

According to the government, renaming Mubarak Chowk after the martyred Army commander who died valiantly at the height of the Kargil conflict in 1999 will not only inspire Delhi residents but also outsiders and visitors to such heroic deeds.

For those of you who are unaware of this hero of india let me tell you that Captain Vikram Batra was an Indian Army officer who served from 9 September 1974 to 7 July 1999. For his actions during the Kargil War, Batra was posthumously given the Param Vir Chakra, the highest Indian military decoration. On July 7, 1999, Batra was killed while battling Pakistani soldiers near Area Ledge, Point 4875, in the Kargil district of the former Jammu and Kashmir.

Mubarak Chowk is one of the most significant junctions or intersections in the national capital, the government claimed. The Deputy CM claimed that when Batra's parents visited Delhi and pleaded with the government to honour the fallen braveheart in this way, they brought up the proposal to rename the Chowk after Batra.

'The Supreme Court itself raised the issue of renaming the Pragati Maidan Metro Station on the Blue Line in September. People who live nearby and several organisations requested that Acharya Mahapragya's name be added to Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, according to the Deputy CM.
The government has decided to change the names of Shakti Nagar Chowk and Lajpat Nagar Flyover to Sri Jhoole Lal Setu and Bhagwan Mahavir Chowk, respectively.

The naming panel also agreed to replace Rani Bagh at Maharshi Dayanand Chowk with board and stone signage. Within a month, the adjustments would be put into effect. The Delhi government established the Sisodia-led Naming Committee in 2017 with the task of naming government facilities and roads.
