The word “Yoga” was first mentioned in Rigveda and also referred to in many Upanishads.

The word ‘Yoga’ is generally derived from the root ‘Yuj’ and in English, the word relates to Yoke which can be interpreted as “control”

The root of “Yoga” is found in hymn of which of the following Vedas?

If we go into the depth of the term Yoga we found that the modern sense of the term was firstly mentioned in the Katha Upanishad. The Upanishad was probably composed between the fifth and third centuries.

At present time the term yoga meant to stretch your body parts and something like physical activity but as per the ancient text the term is meant to be the “Union” and this could be understood in many ways.

If we talk about the term Yoga the discussion is useless until we include the name of rishi Patanjali who wrote “Yoga Sutra of Patanjali” in the early centuries.

There can be different kinds of Yoga and one of them “Hatha Yoga” is very popular among Indian saints. It also can be seen easily in the ashrams of Indian saints where they used to perform the rituals of Hatha yoga.

Swami Vivekananda also focused on the term Yoga and spread the value of the term in western countries. Vivekananda worked prominently in the field of Yoga and introduced the Yoga Sutra in the western world later on which became the most known after 20 century.
