The topology of a storage area network (SAN) refers to the arrangement or configuration of SANs. A fibre channel fabric topology, which is an infrastructure specifically designed to manage storage communications, is commonly used in SANs. It provides faster and more reliable access than higher-level protocols used in network-attached storage (NAS).
A fabric is conceptually equivalent to a network segment in a local area network (LAN). A typical fibre channel SAN fabric is made up of several fibre channel switches.
