  • A camerais an optical device that records visual information. Cameras are made up of sealed boxes (the camera body) with a small hole (the aperture) that allows light to pass through so that an image can be captured on a light-sensitive surface (usually photographic film or a digital sensor). Different systems in cameras govern how light falls onto the light-sensitive surface.
  • The light entering the camera is focused by lenses. The aperture can be made smaller or larger. The length of time the photosensitive surface is exposed to light is determined by a shutter mechanism.
  • In the art of photography, the still image camera is the most important tool. Photographs, digital imaging, and photographic printing can all be used to replicate captured images later. Film, videography, and cinematography are similar artistic professions in the moving-image camera realm.
