  • Video on demand (VOD) is a media distribution technology that allows viewers to watch videos without the need for a standard video player or the limitations of a static programming schedule. The most frequent type of media delivery in the twentieth century was broadcasting in the form of over-the-air programming.
  • Consumers began to gravitate towards non-traditional ways of content consumption as Internet and IPTV technologies advanced in the 1990s, culminating in the debut of VOD on televisions and personal computers. Unlike broadcast television, VOD systems initially required each user to have a high-bandwidth Internet connection to access the programming.
