Is the Internet helping people? If so, how?
  • In a world heading toward 'networked individualism,' the internetplays a socially positive role. People can ask their social networks for guidance via email, and the web helps them to acquire knowledge and find support and information while they make key decisions.
  • While traditional methods of communication, such as in-person visits and landline phone talks, remain the most common ways for people to stay in touch with others in their social networks, our research reveals that email can help people grow their social networks.
  • The internet and email play a significant role in keeping these social networks connected. Rather of clashing with people's communal ties, we've discovered that the internet complements in-person and phone interactions. Members can retain active contact with large social networks using the internet, even if many of the people in those networks do not reside nearby.
