What is a Skype translator preview?

• Skype Translator is a speech-to-speech translation programme created by Skype, which has been a Microsoft company since 2018. Since December 15, 2015, the Skype Translator Preview has been available to the general public. Skype Translator is a standalone programme that has been included into the Skype for Windows desktop app since October 2015.
• Skype Translator is based on Microsoft Translator's statistical machine translation technology and advances in deep neural networks for speech recognition. Users chat in their original languages, and speech is translated from one language to the other in 'near real-time,' with computer-generated speech synthesis presenting the output translation. Speech translation is available in English, French, German, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, and Russian in the current edition.
