The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 is an Act of the Parliament of India that gives citizens the right to information from the Government of India and its agencies. The Act was passed on 15 June 2005 and came into force on 12 October 2005.
Under the RTI Act, you can ask for information from any government body, including the central government, state governments, and local bodies. You can ask for information about anything that is in the public domain, such as the salaries of government officials, the details of government contracts, and the minutes of government meetings.
To make an RTI request, you need to write a letter to the concerned government body. The letter should contain the following information:
- Your name and address
- The information you are requesting
- The reason why you are requesting the information
- The date on which you are making the request
You can send your RTI request by post, by email, or in person. The government body is required to reply to your RTI request within 30 days. If the government body does not reply to your request within 30 days, you can file a complaint with the Central Information Commission (CIC).
The CIC is the highest authority in India for dealing with RTI complaints. If the CIC finds that the government body has not complied with the RTI Act, it can order the government body to provide the information or to take other action.
Here are the steps on how to get anything known by the government under RTI:
- Identify the information you want. What do you want to know about the government? This could be anything from the salaries of government officials to the details of government contracts.
- Find the right government body. The government body that you need to contact will depend on the information you are requesting. For example, if you want to know about the salaries of government officials, you will need to contact the Ministry of Finance.
- Write an RTI request. Your RTI request should be in writing and should include the following information:
- Your name and address
- The information you are requesting
- The reason why you are requesting the information
- The date on which you are making the request
- Send your RTI request. You can send your RTI request by post, by email, or in person.
- Wait for a reply. The government body is required to reply to your RTI request within 30 days. If the government body does not reply to your request within 30 days, you can file a complaint with the CIC.
