The NRC is an official record of the individuals who are lawful Indian residents. It incorporates segment data pretty much each one of those people who qualify as residents of India according to the Citizenship Act, 1955. The register was first arranged after the 1951 Census of India and from that point forward it has not been refreshed as of not long ago.

Up until this point, such a database has just been kept up for the territory of Assam. Notwithstanding, on November 20, Home Minister Amit Shah announced during a parliamentary meeting that the register would be reached out to the whole nation.

This has been a state-explicit exercise to keep its ethnic uniqueness unaltered. In 2013, Assam Public Works and Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha and others filed a writ request under the watchful eye of the Supreme Court requesting the cancellation of unlawful vagrants' names from voter records in Assam.
