Mizoram is a mountainous region state. It became the 23rd state of India in February 1949. It was a district of Assam until it became a Union Territory in 1972. In 1897, the two were merged to form a district called Lushai Hills district and it came under the administration of the Chief Commissioner of Assam. When the Northeast Region Reorganization Act came into force in 1972, Mizoram became a Union Territory.

As a result of the historic agreement between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front in 1979, it was granted full statehood on 20 February 1979.
