The 1951 Asian Games also known as Asiad were the first Asian Games sports event where India participated and hosted jointly. It was organized in the capital city of New Delhi from 4 March to 11 March 1951. A total of 459 Athletes participated in it. Japan athletes won the most medals with a total of 60 medals which included 24 gold medals. India secured the second position with 15 gold medals and overall 51 medals in it's medal tally.

The then head of the state, Prime Minister Jawaharal Nehru termed this event as the sporting unification of sportsmanship in India. The next Asia Games which were held in India were 1982 Asian Games. Dalip Singh was the torch lighter athlete of the 1951 Asia Games and the opening ceremony was officiated by the then President Of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Except for the Soviet Union and Vietnam (due to their political structure) were invited to take part in this multi-nation event.
