Make a backup with Time Machine.
  1. An external storage device, such as a USB or Thunderbolt drive, should be connected.
  2. From the Time Machine option in the menu bar, select Preferences. Alternatively, go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Time Machine.
  3. Select a backup disc by clicking on it.
  4. Select your disk's name, then click Use Disk. Time Machine starts producing backups on a regular basis right away, without you having to do anything.
Choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar if you want to start a backup manually rather than waiting for the next automated backup.
