Use Time Machine, your Mac's built-in backup function, to back up your personal data, including apps, music, photographs, email, and documents, automatically.
An external storage device, such as a USB or Thunderbolt drive, should be connected. Find out more about backup discs and how to use them with Time Machine.
From the Time Machine option in the menu bar, select Preferences. Alternatively, go to the Apple menu >
System Preferences > Time Machine.
Select a backup disc by clicking on it.
Select your disk's name, then click Use Disk. Time Machine starts producing backups on a regular basis right away, without you having to do anything.
Choose Back Up Now from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar if you want to start a backup manually rather than waiting for the next automated backup.
