Banbury clubs were undoubtedly among the first bicycle clubs in the UK, while the Pickwick Bicycle Club is widely regarded as the first. Six bicycle enthusiasts convened at the Downs Hotel in Hackney Downs, East London, in June 1870 to create this club, which is still active today.
The Banbury Advertiser published confirmation of the foundation of The Banbury and District Bicycle Club, as it was originally termed, and the enrollment of 26 members on February 11, 1875. After a few years, the word District was omitted, and the club decided to use its final iteration of the Banbury Cyclists' Club at its annual meeting in 1883. (BCC).
On March 29th, 1875, seven riders set off from Banbury Cross on a 61-mile ride up to Coventry and back on their “ordinaries” (Penny Farthing style bike).
The Banbury Advertiser, dated Thursday 12th February 1891, also confirmed the formation of the new Banbury Star Cyclists' Club, reporting 'Formation of the Banbury Star Cyclists' Club announced – Mr. J Phillips as secretary, Mr. J. Kilsby as treasurer, Mr. E. Allit as captain, and Mr. E. Barden as a bugler.' The notice made no mention of Banbury Cyclists' Club.
