The history of badminton in India shows that the modern version of the game was invented in the city of Pune in the state of Maharashtra. It is the second most popular sport in India after cricket. Badminton is a descendant of battledore, which was a game played with a bat or racket and a shuttlecock in ancient Greece about 2000 years ago. The present version of badminton has its roots in India and has been one of the most popular games since medieval times. In the 19th century, British Army officers stationed in Pune developed badminton into its current form and competitively played it. Because the city of Pune was once known as Poona, the game was also dubbed Poona at the time. Poona is a game for kids that combines battledore and shuttlecock.

In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club became the first dedicated badminton club, and ten years later, the club updated the informal Indian regulations. The regulations of the Bath Badminton Club created the foundation for modern badminton. Six years after the Badminton Association of England, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) was founded in 1899. (BAE). It is one of the world's oldest badminton governing bodies.

The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was founded in 1934 as the sport's global regulatory organization. Later, it was renamed Badminton World Federation (BWF). In 1936, India became a member of the organization. At the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, and women's doubles events were added to the schedule. Mixed doubles were introduced to the list in 1996. The first male shuttlers to represent India in the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992 were Deepankar Bhattacharya and U Vimal Kumar. India's only female representative at the event was Madhumita Bisht.

With the Premier Badminton League (PBL), which began in 2016, badminton in India caught on to the trend of franchise-based sporting leagues. The state of Andhra Pradesh (now Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) has produced the majority of India's badminton greats, with the region serving as a breeding ground for the sport.
