Farhan was born on January 9, 1974, in Mumbai. Farhan Akhtar is the grandson of famous Urdu poet Jaan-Nisar. Farhan Akhtar's stepmother Shabana Azmi is also a Bollywood actress. Farhan Akhtar has a sister-Joya Akhtar, who is a director and writer. Farhan Akhtar is the cousin of director-choreographer Farah Khan.
Despite having films from the cover, Farhan never resorted to his father or mother to be established in Bollywood. Farahan started her career as an assistant director at the age of just 17, after which he produced his own production house Excel Entertainment in association with her childhood friend Ritesh Sidhwani.
Akhtar made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai. The film received many awards and nomination along with critic’s award. Farahan's first directed film was written by his father Javed Akhtar. After this Akhtar made a remake of the 1986 Amitabh Bachchan starrer Don, in which Shahrukh Khan played the main lead.
So far, director Farhan Akhtar had made his way into Bollywood. After this, he tried his luck in acting. Akhtar made his Bollywood debut from Axel Entertainment Produced Film Rock On. Akhtar also used singing in this film. Farhan was also honored by the National Award for the film Rock On.
Dil Chahta Hai, Rock On Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Milkha Singh, Kartik Kaling Kartik, Dawn, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Fukrey, Luck By Chance are some of the finest he has acted in so far.
