Colombo the largest city of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka or Sri Lanka is the commercial capital of the country. Colombo is located adjacent to the Greater Colombo area on the west coast. Colombo was made the capital of the island country Sri Lanka after the island nation was ceded to the British Empire in 1815. Colombo covers a total area of 37.31 sq km (14.41 sq mi). As per the Sri Lankan census of 2011, the total population of Colombo is 752,993 and the population density of the city is 20,182 per sq km (52,270 per sq mi). The Governing body of the city is Colombo Municipal Council with the headquarters at Town Hall. Rosy Senanayake is the Mayor of Colombo. Some of the famous tourist attractions in Colombo are Pettah which is famous for shopping, the Galle Face Green beach, Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple which is a traditional temple and education centre and the Viharamahadevi Park. Some other famous tourist attractions of the city are Colombo Lotus Tower, Beira Lake, Mount Lavinia beach, Nelum Pokuna Theatre and the National Museum.
